FAQ

Most municipal councils allow the use of greywater, provided it is used within 24 hours. Seek confirmation from your local councils’ planning department if in doubt.
Semi regular flushing by simply opening up the taps fitted to your system once a month will ensure this does not occur. We recommend an annual service of your system be conducted. This takes between 30-60 minutes and you can do it yourself or have one of our technicians do it for you. While out in the garden it is easy to check for and remove any in lint build-up. Service tools required – an old toothbrush.
No the system does not treat or filter the water. A simple lint trap is fitted to minimise the build up of lint in your system. The components of the system have been designed to tolerate large lint loads between servicing.
You may need to reconsider the type of cleaning product you use in your day to day washing. A number of leading brands available at most supermarkets are safe for use in your garden although you need to take care with sensitive plant types such as ferns. Normally watering at least 75cm away from the trunk of the plant overcomes this type of problem. More environmentally friendly cleaning products are continuously coming to the market. The cleaning power of these products is improving all the time. If doing a wash with bleach based cleaner, simply click the switch and divert to drain.
Provided you divert the water to drain when using garden unfriendly cleaning products most plants respond very well to greywater. In many cases growth rates can increase by up to 30%. We recommend you monitor plants when you begin using greywater and simply move the water source further from the base of the plant if dis-colouration of the leaves occurs.
In our 10-year research and development phase we made a number of major breakthroughs in the area of gravity irrigation. In some cases we are running the water through up to 350 metres of irrigation line up and down hills on gravity. When required a pump can be added to your system, our designers will be able to advice you if this is required.
This has been achieved through the unique design of the Greywater Gardener. Extensive product development over 10 years ensures our system works in the way we have proved it does. Our customers often express amazement at how their Greywater Gardener does this in their garden
Used responsibly the risks associated with greywater are minimal. Simple precautions are; ensuring children do not come into contact with greywater, and diverting the water to drain when laundering the clothes of someone who is ill. Applying the greywater to your garden through sub- surface irrigation will ensure that health risks do not occur.
Greywater Gardeners dramatically reduce the amount of fertilizer required by the average gardens. Some plant types that require specific types of fertilizers may still require this special treatment but due to nutrients in greywater we recommend that phosphate based products be used sparingly, if at all.
If you have a large garden it may be possible to use your shower water as well, although you should seek guidance from your municipal council. Because of the Greywater Gardeners unique highly water efficient design most gardens thrive on the laundry greywater alone. Owners of larger gardens should be aware of the additional health risks that are present in greywater from the shower/bath. However the key risks associated with shower and bath water are associated with the chemicals in this wastewater. Cleaning products such as: tile and glass cleaners; disinfectants; hair dye; and anti-dandruff shampoos may build up to high levels in soils over extended periods of time.
Over the years people have made simple changes to our system, allowing them to water their lawns. They report their lawns have responded well to greywater, although we urge you to take basic precautions.
The system is currently watering up to 350 individual plants in some gardens with excellent results. A standard Greywater Gardener system normally waters between 60-200 plants.
This depends on a number of points such as; how many plants it’s watering, how much water your washing machine uses, the type of soil in your garden. It can take anywhere between 10 minutes and two hours and this can be adjusted to suit your garden and lifestyle.
In Victoria the rebate is paid as credit to your water bill, this may vary elsewhere.
We recommend an annual service be conducted which takes 30-60 minutes. You can do this yourself or have one of our technicians do it for you. It is also simple to just check a couple of points in your Greywater Gardener system to ensure that it is working properly. We also suggest that you open the taps fitted to the system once a month to allow it to flush out.
A Waterwise Systems certified technician or a licensed plumber simply fits a new pipeline out of your laundry.
An internal overflow is fitted to your system and any water your garden cannot absorb will be sent back to the sewerage system.
The surge capsule is fitted alongside a wall outside your home. The specific location will be decided on during the design process, subject to your home and gardens requirements.
All components of the system that come into contact with greywater are made of various types of long life UV stabilised plastic. This ensures that the system will last for many decades. One component of the system is made of steel, which is plastic coated to prevent rusting.
Most government authorities agree that greywater can be used on plants such as tomatoes and fruit trees as the fruit does not come into contact with greywater. In Victoria the EPA recommends the plants eaten raw or lightly cooked should not be watered with greywater, whereas in NSW the initial position would appear to be that provided sub-surface watering is used then plants such as lettuce’s are ok with greywater. This is because the water only comes into contact with the roots of the plant. Humans have been using grey water on food crops for many years. Check with your local municipal authority if you are in doubt.
The key risk associated with greywater is unsuitable cleaning products being used in the garden. Uninformed greywater use over an extended period can create very real problems. These include local waterways and stormwater drains suffering from blue green algae blooms due to nutrient run-off, and localised soil contamination with petro and other chemicals.
This depends on how much you water your garden. A number of people that have installed our systems have reduced their water consumption by 350 000 litres per annum. In Melbourne the average garden uses an average of approximately 1946 litres of drinking per week according to water providers. Areas with warmer climates use more.
This depends on how much you water your garden and how much your water provider charges you for water. However in densely populated areas and cities where water providers and catchment authorities are struggling to manage water demand we can anticipate substantial increase in the cost of water where use exceeds a benchmark set by governments in consultation with communities.
Yes a switch is fitted inside and outside your home allowing you to simply send the water back down the drain. We recommend you do this during wet periods and when using environmentally unfriendly cleaning products.
